NOTICE OF INTENT TO ADOPT A BY-LAW REGARDING REGIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION (REMO)

Notice is hereby given that Amherst Town Council intends to consider the adoption of a Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO) By-Law.

The Emergency Management Act (section 10(1)) requires a Municipality to “…establish and maintain a municipal emergency by-law.” Earlier this year the Department of Emergency Management developed a recommended by-law for municipalities to adopt.

The proposed by-law provides the framework for the creation of the Regional Emergency Management Organization, the Regional Emergency Management Advisory Committee and the Regional Emergency Management Planning Committee as well as the Regional Emergency Management Coordinator position.

The proposed by-law also sets out the duties and relationship between the various components of the Regional Emergency Management Organization, how a state of local emergency is declared and the powers and responsibilities of the Mayor, Council and employees of the Town during an emergency.

Council intends to give second reading of the Regional Emergency Management By-Law at their regular meeting scheduled for October 26, 2026, at 6:00 P.M.  The proposed By-law may be inspected and/or a copy obtained at the office of the Municipal Clerk, Dominion Public Building, 98 East Victoria Street, Amherst during regular business hours.
