When Melanie Cyr was growing up in Memramcook, NB, she often travelled with her mother to Amherst so they could take care of shopping for the family.
“My mom lives in Irishtown now,” Melanie said. “She still comes to Amherst to shop, and she’s always happy when she comes home. Because of her, when I had my kids, we always came here, and now my kids know their way around Amherst.”
A few years ago, Melanie’s daughter Danica was in university and wanted to start a small side business to generate some income. She started out creating cupcakes, but it wasn’t quite the right fit. Melanie explained that it’s long been their family tradition to bring cheesecake whenever they’re invited to a holiday supper or special event. So, after a lot of experimentation and combining several recipes, she and Danica developed a new product: cheesecake on a stick.

In support of our Mission to provide quality leadership, services, opportunities and resources for the benefit of our citizens, Amherst Town Council recently adopted a set of 2024 Strategic Priorities that will support the town’s growth and development in a fair, equitable and transparent manner.
“Town staff, our Mayor and Councillors meet every year and hold a strategic priority planning day, where we review the previous year’s areas of focus and determine the best way to move our organization forward,” said Jason MacDonald, CAO of the Town of Amherst. “We focus on developing four main priorities, but they don’t change annually just for the sake of changing; this year, we changed only one because, although we’ve made great progress across the board, our work in three of our categories is ongoing.”
