Notice is hereby given that the Amherst Town Council intends to consider a By-law to Amend the Town of Amherst Fires and Burning of Materials By-law C-07.
The purpose of the amendments is to provide additional clarification around the use of recreational outdoor burning appliances fueled by propane or natural gas. This clarification is intended to ensure consistent understanding and application of the by-law’s requirements.

Call for Citizen Appointments
The Town of Amherst is looking for interested citizens to fill two vacancies on the Town of Amherst Audit Committee. This committee assists Town Council in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities relating to finance and audit matters.
To be a candidate for appointment, a person must demonstrate all of the following qualifications to the satisfaction of Council:
- Possess a knowledge of finance and audit-related matters;
- Be of good character;
- Possess the skills and abilities to make the commitment of time and effort required to carry out committee responsibilities; and,
- Consent to criminal record and background checks.
Town Facilities Closed on September 30

Tuesday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In recognition of this day, the following Town of Amherst facilities will be closed:
- Amherst Town Hall
- Public Works Garage
- Community Credit Union Business Innovation Centre
- Amherst Stadium
Public Works emergency service: 902-667-7227.
Amherst Police and Fire services will operate as normal on September 30.
Facilities will resume regular operating hours on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

2025 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

A number of events are taking place in Amherst leading up to #NDTR on September 30.
𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: Students from Spring Street Academy and Cumberland North Academy came to Curry Park this afternoon for a special tribute. Each student painted a stone in a way that was meaningful to them, and each stone was placed around one of the park's trees.
Mrs. Henry shared: "Art is much more than visual expression - it's a living testament to the world's oldest surviving cultures. Through symbols, and storytelling, Indigenous people pass down spiritual beliefs, ancestral knowledge, and deep connections to the land."
September 22, 2025 Amherst Town Council Highlights

On Monday night a motion was approved to amend the 2025/26 general capital budget, and the 2025/26 water utility capital budget, to include the engineering design to reconstruct West Victoria Street from the CNR tracks to Hickman Street. This engineering design work is estimated at $67,000 inclusive of applicable taxes.
Several more financially-focused motions were approved Monday night, including the request from Maggie’s Place for a $2,000 community support grant to purchase back-to-school supplies for children in Amherst and Cumberland County.
Council approved the transfer of small amounts from Solid Waste and Sewer Operating Reserves to General Operating, to fund respective department deficits. And, funding changes were approved allowing the increase of Water Operating Capital from revenue from $40,000 to $134,000.
A motion was approved for $75,000 to replace the Fire Chief’s command vehicle.
Council accepted the recommendation of the Audit Committee, approving the Town of Amherst Consolidated Financial Statements for the year ended March 31, 2025, which have been audited by the firm McIsaac Darragh Inc. Council also re-appointed that same firm as the municipal auditor for auditing services for the 2025/26 fiscal year.
