Update: Work will continue this Saturday and Sunday May 31 and June 1
Station Street will re-open to all traffic at 5 PM on Friday, May 30. Work will continue at 77 Station Street on Saturday and Sunday where the street will remain open to all traffic, but minor delays may occur.
Caution should be used as there will be workers in the area.

The Town of Amherst will begin work to the building located at 77 Station Street starting on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 7:00 am. This work is expected to take 10 days. The building is being dealt with under Part XV of the Municipal Government Act and has been deemed a dangerous and unsightly premises.
Due to this, Station Street will be closed daily from Crescent Avenue to Abbott Street during weekday business hours (7 AM to 5 PM) until work is complete.
All avenues under the Municipal Government Act were pursued by the Town to have the owner(s) complete the required work, but the owner(s) have failed to take action. The Town is carrying out this work to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Playground Update: Lions Park swings temporarily removed

The swings at Amherst Lions Park have been temporarily removed as we await parts for repairs. This equipment will be made available again as soon as possible.
NOTICE OF INTENT: By-Law to Repeal the Vacant Building By-law, P-5

Notice is hereby given that the Amherst Town Council intends to consider a By-law to Repeal the Town of Amherst Vacant Building By-law, P-5.
The subject By-law, adopted in 2011, sets out requirements and standards for vacant buildings. In particular, it requires that vacant buildings be kept weather tight and secure from unauthorized entry. These requirements are already covered and enforced under the Dangerous or Unsightly Premises sections of the Municipal Government Act.
Council intends to give second reading at its next regular meeting scheduled for June 23, 2025 at 6:00 PM. Copies of the repealing by-law may be inspected and/or a copy obtained at the office of the Municipal Clerk, Dominion Public Building, 98 East Victoria Street, Amherst during regular business hours.

NOTICE OF INTENT: By-law to Amend the Building By-law D-6

Notice is hereby given that the Amherst Town Council intends to consider the adoption of a By-law to Amend the Building By-law D-6.
The purpose of the proposed amendments is to bring the By-law up to date due to recent changes to the Building Code Regulations and the National Building Code of Canada. The proposed amendments are mostly housekeeping in nature to update definitions to align with the Building Code Regulations and National Building Code wording.
Council intends to give second reading at its next regular meeting scheduled for June 23, 2025 at 6:00 PM. The proposed by-law may be inspected and/or a copy obtained at the office of the Municipal Clerk, Dominion Public Building, 98 East Victoria Street, Amherst during regular business hours.

Notice of Approval - Development Agreement: 112 West Victoria Street

Notice is hereby given that Amherst Town Council, at a meeting held May 26, 2025 passed a motion to enter into a Development Agreement on the property located at 112 West Victoria Street (PID 25000605) to permit the construction of two 16-unit and three 8-unit apartment buildings.
Section 249 of the Municipal Government Act provides the right to appeal this decision to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board within 14 days from the date of this notice.

Traffic disruption May 21 - Havelock Street
- Details
Traffic control flaggers are in place on Havelock Street today between Ratchford and Prince Arthur Streets while Nova Scotia Power does work in the area.
Drivers are advised to expect delays, or to choose an alternate route. This work is expected to be completed later today.
Water main flushing starts May 20, 2025
- Details
The Town of Amherst Water Utility will perform water main flushing starting Tuesday May 20, 2025 continuing for approximately five weeks.
During this time customers may experience turbidity (cloudy water) and low water pressure, and may need to run their cold water for 5-10 minutes or until it becomes clear. The Utility suggests you thoroughly flush your system following water main flushing to release any entrapped air or sediment from your system.
