Male Facing Charges in Relation to Stolen Vehicle

A 24-year-old Bible Hill man is facing numerous charges in relation to a vehicle that was reported stolen in Truro on June 25th, 2024.
On July 1st, 2024, shortly after 6:00pm, a member of the Amherst Police Department spotted the vehicle pulling into a residence on Eddy Street. The vehicle, a white Ford F250, was noted to have a single military license plate attached to it rather than two. A traffic stop was conducted and police learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Truro on the morning of June 25th, 2024. It was also learned that the military license plate was not connected to the vehicle and it also was reportedly stolen. The driver provided police with false information, which included his name and date of birth. He was arrested and later identified by his fingerprints and at this time, it was learned that the accused was the subject of a release order that included house arrest conditions.

Amherst Town Council June 24, 2024 – Meeting Highlights

At Monday night’s regular meeting of Council, an agreement was approved with the Springhill Coal Miners Senior Hockey team for ice time in Amherst for the 2024/25 season, and the Mayor and CAO were authorized to sign on behalf of the Town.
An initial one-year contract will follow the same structure and fees as those recently negotiated with the Amherst Junior “A” Ramblers Hockey Club.
The Coal Miners’ new owners will be engaging with the community to determine a new team name and branding to reflect the team’s move.

Break and Enter, Possession Stolen Property Charges

A 59-year-old Amherst man has been arrested and remanded in relation to a break-and-enter at the Amherst Cemetery that was discovered on the morning of June 20th, 2024.

Male Arrested on Canada-Wide Warrant Faces Additional Drug Charges

A 48-year-old Pictou County man has been arrested on a Canada-wide warrant and is also facing additional trafficking charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, breach of release condition charges and charges under the Cannabis Act.

Amherst Police Association Signs New Contract 20240611

A new five-year collective agreement has been reached between the Town of Amherst and the Atlantic Police Association Local 104, which will take effect retroactively to April 1, 2024.
At a special Council meeting today, Amherst Town Council unanimously voted to accept the proposed 5 year agreement. “This is the second consecutive contract that the Town and the police union have successfully completed negotiations without the use of legal counsel or an arbitrator in more than 40 years”, said Mayor David Kogon. “Our everyday relationship with the Amherst Police Department is strong, and so is our mutual interest in providing sustainable, community-based municipal policing for the Town of Amherst.”
The new agreement will expire on March 31, 2029, and includes a schedule of annual wage increases for constables: Year 1: 5%; Year 2: 4.75%; Year 3: 4.5%; Year 4: 4.5%; and, Year 5: 4.25%.

Amherst Town Council May 27, 2024 – Meeting Highlights

Council approved the 2024 list of Community Support Grant recipients on Monday night, numbering 30. Expenditures include $113,500 from the Community Support Grants budget, $50,000 from the social equity fund, and $35,000 from social equity reserves for In The Works.

Second Reading for Two Residential Projects
Two residential construction projects received second reading on Monday night. With the development agreement approved for a 20-acre portion of the property at 305 Church Street, a residential development will be permitted, containing a full range of housing types from single detached dwellings to cluster housing and apartment buildings.
