Amherst Town Council May 27, 2024 – Meeting Highlights

Council approved the 2024 list of Community Support Grant recipients on Monday night, numbering 30. Expenditures include $113,500 from the Community Support Grants budget, $50,000 from the social equity fund, and $35,000 from social equity reserves for In The Works.

Second Reading for Two Residential Projects
Two residential construction projects received second reading on Monday night. With the development agreement approved for a 20-acre portion of the property at 305 Church Street, a residential development will be permitted, containing a full range of housing types from single detached dwellings to cluster housing and apartment buildings.

Female Arrested in Relation to Stolen Vehicle

A 30-year-old Amherst woman has been arrested and remanded into custody in relation to a vehicle theft that occurred during the early morning hours of May 20th, 2024.
On May 20th, 2024, shortly before 6:00am, the owner of a GMC Terrian reported that his vehicle was stolen from their residence on Mission Street in Amherst. The vehicle was later tracked to an address in Springhill NS and was observed by Cumberland RCMP and fled from police. Shortly afterwards, the vehicle was located in Amherst and the accused was arrested nearby.
During the investigation, a second set of keys for a Dodge Ram was located and police learned that these keys had been stolen a few days earlier in the same area. An APD member canvassed the area with the keys in attempts to locate the vehicle that the keys belonged to. The vehicle and the owners were located and the keys were returned.
Jessica Dawn SCOTT, aged 30 of Amherst has been charged with:
- Committing an indicatable offense with face covered – Section 351(2) CC
- Theft of a motor vehicle – Section 333.1(1) CC
- Possession of break-in tools – Section 351(1) CC
- Possession of stolen property over $5000 - Section 354(1)(a) CC
- Possession of stolen property under $5000 – Section 354(1)(a) CC
- Fleeing Police – Section 320.17 CC
- Operate a motor vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public – Section 3230.13(1) CC
Scott was remanded into custody and is set to appear before the court again on May 21st, 2024 in Amherst Provincial Court.

Male Arrested in E-Bike Theft

On March 25, 2024, at approximately 4:42 am in the morning the Amherst Police Department responded to a burglary alarm at a business on Church Street in Amherst Nova Scotia. Upon arrival, Officers determined that someone had broken the glass to the front door of the business and a break-in had occurred. During the incident, it was determined that high-valued electric bicycles had been stolen from inside the business.

Amherst Town Council April 22, 2024 – Meeting Highlights

At Amherst Town Council’s regular meeting on Monday night, three items were presented relating to residential development in town.
First reading was given to a development agreement for a 20-acre portion of 305 Church Street, to allow a residential development and to schedule a public hearing for Wednesday, May 15 – at 5 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Amherst Town Council Approves 2024-2025 Operating Budget, Including Initial Funding for a New Community Centre

At its regular meeting on Monday night, Amherst Town Council approved this fiscal year’s tax rates as well as the 2024-2025 general and water utility operating budgets.
The general operating budget was set at slightly over $22 million, and the water utility’s operating budget was set at just over $2.6 million. The overall tax rate remains the same as the previous year.

Fraud Charges Laid in Property-Related Complaints

The Amherst Police Department has arrested and charged a 35-year-old male in relation to a series of frauds that occurred in the Amherst area.
The 11-month investigation began when police received a call from owners of a rental property who reported that they were not receiving rent or damage deposits.
