Amherst Town Council is considering the adoption of a Road Trails Designation By-law that would provide access for ATVs to the downtown area via Eddy Street, in accordance with the Nova Scotia Road Trails Act (Act). As shown on the attached map, this access would connect to an existing designated road trail on Eddy Road and a larger regional trail network. ATV parking would be available within an existing parking lot located at 8 Eddy Street.
ATV tourism has the potential to make a positive contribution to the local economy. Recognizing this opportunity, Council is interested in providing ATV access to commercial areas, enabling ATV tourists to support local businesses.
The Act has several requirements for ATV road trail users, including but not limited to: a driver’s license, license plate and insurance, head and tail lights, a 25 km/h speed limit, and no operation between 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise. The Town of Amherst invites you to attend a public meeting on Monday, September 14th, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers, 98 East Victoria Street, Amherst, NS. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an overview of the proposed Road Trails Designation By-law followed by an opportunity for questions and comments.
