What's Up Rec?

Skating, snowshoeing great options to keep you moving

Being active is one of the best ways to keep your heart and lungs healthy.

With the colder weather setting in, the Amherst Stadium indoor walking track is getting lots of action, with walkers putting in laps on a daily basis. With the pressures of the busy holiday season building, walking can help you maintain a healthy weight, strengthen bones and muscles, improve your mood and help relieve stress.

Stay tuned for details on our indoor walking challenge at the stadium in the new year.

As part of the Recreation Master Plan recommendations, staff continue to maintain parks and green spaces, trails and walking infrastructure. The Amherst Stadium offers Skating 2 Bfree recreational skating as part of the plan’s effort to increase facilities use and to become the most active, healthy community in Nova Scotia.

The skating schedule provides many opportunities to don the skates and take a spin around the stadium. Helmets are required for ALL public skating. Skates and helmets are available for lending free of charge, as part of the Town of Amherst Physical Activity Strategy that supports an active, healthy Amherst. You can also skate on our outdoor rink on Victoria St.

Snowshoes and Nordic trekking poles will be available for lending once the snow starts falling.  Adult and kid sizes are available.

Please visit https://amherst.ca/community-events-calendar.html  for an up-to-date full stadium and community event schedule.

Winter Carnival

Our sixth annual Winter Carnival will take place from Feb. 11 to Feb. 17. It will celebrate heart, culture and play.  Popular activities will be returning to the carnival schedule, including an outdoor skating party, the Chili Challenge, Amherst Valentines Run, swimming and some new events.

Volunteer Recognition

Is there a volunteer that you know deserves recognition? Volunteers are a very important part of our community. Each year, communities across Canada celebrate National Volunteer week to thank and honour individuals who donate their time helping others and supporting causes that they believe.

If you would like to nominate someone that has impacted your life as a volunteer, you can find the form online at Amherst.ca or at Town hall.  The Volunteer Recognition event will be held in April 2020.

Learn what is happening around the community by visiting amherst.ca for our free community events listing and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
