The fifth annual Winter Carnival is in full swing, with activities for all ages taking place until Feb. 18.
In support of an active and healthy Amherst, this week-long festival has more than 100 ways to celebrate heart, culture and play.
Highlighted Winter Carnival events include the Celebrate Vince Art Exhibit, the Amherst Valentines Run, wellness expo, free swims, outdoor play day, chili cookoff, alpine curling, Maritime Story Telling Circley, family bowling and darts.
The outdoor play day takes place on Feb. 17 at Dickey Park. Enjoy street hockey with the Ramblers, a doggy social, snowshoeing and sledding – weather permitting.
There are some great workshops being offered by Winter Carnival by local partners. Signing up for sketching-drawing classes with artist Jan Boiduk and send in your favourite photo to enter the Winter Photo Contest. Learn some social media marketing tips, tricks and tweaks with ARC Social Media or enjoy a Detox, Sleep, Breath Workshop, or couples massage with Stephanie Allen from Gateway Wellness & Leadership Development.
You can also sign up for the dream pillow workshop, needle felting workshop or hooking owl with Logon workshop. Learn some healthy tips at the forget the weight feel great workshop at the Atlantic Superstore. Wear red for Flag Day or skate under the stars with the Snore Shop on the outdoor skating surface.
Are you looking for Valentine’s Day plans? Tickets are still available for ‘A Comedy Night’ featuring Dylan Mahaney. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m. Bring your sweetheart for an evening of laughs while enjoying a decadent dessert, tea or coffee. Tickets are $15 available at Bliss Café, Amherst town hall, Simply for Life and Eventbrite.com.
More than 300 runners are registered for the annual Amherst Valentine’s Run on Feb. 16. Runners of all ages will participate this year in a 1k, 3k, 5k, 10k or half marathon run.
New this year is the 1k, which was introduced to encourage youth to put on their sneakers and venture out in the cold.

On the second floor of Dalye’s, JC’s Tae Kwon Do will hold a board-breaking demonstration.
Don’t forget the Amherst Jr. A Ramblers are in the homestretch of the season. They will play two games during our winter carnival. The first is on Feb. 16 against the Pictou Crushers. They play again on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. against rival Truro Bearcats in the Heritage Classic.
Also Feb. 18, check out family bowling, curling 101 open house, a snowshoe/trail walk, celebrate Vincent Art exhibit, all levels yoga class and the Maritime Story Telling circle.
