The Town of Amherst is ready to welcome the world.
In partnership with Hockey Canada, the Town of Amherst will be hosting the Finnish national women’s hockey team’s pre-tournament training camp as they prepare for the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship, which is being held in Halifax and Truro between March 31, 2020, and April 10, 2020.
“We are excited to host Team Finland and we welcome them to the Town of Amherst as they prepare for the world championships,” Mayor David Kogon said. “These players are among the best in the world and we are honoured to have them in our community.”
The owner of 2 Abbott St. will be able to put a detached dwelling on the property following council’s decision on Feb. 24, 2020, to approve the second reading of a development agreement between the town and owner.
The property, bounded by Station and Abbott streets and Douglas Avenue, is situated in the Downtown Zone, a zone where detached dwellings are only permitted if a development agreement is obtained.
Prior to the second reading, the development agreement was the subject of a public participation opportunity that was held on Oct. 10, 2019. Only one member of the public other than the applicant attended the meeting and that person spoke in favour of the development agreement.
A free provincewide program could help low-income residents in the Town of Amherst and surrounding area improve the energy efficiency of their homes, Amherst town council’s committee of the whole learned recently.
Called HomeWarming, the program is sponsored by Nova Scotia Power and the Province of Nova Scotia and is administered by Efficiency Nova Scotia and the Clean Foundation.
“HomeWarming has helped more than 10,000 Nova Scotians save on heating costs and enjoy a more comfortable home, while having more room in their budgets for other priorities by offering free home energy assessments and free home upgrades to low-income residents,” says a brochure Jenn Hickey, a HomeWarming outreach agent, presented to the committee on Feb. 18.
It is important to recognize women’s achievements and acknowledge the challenges they face in the quest for gender equality, says Mayor David Kogon.
“Women have contributed greatly to our society, our country, our province and our town despite facing many challenges,” Kogon said. “Without those contributions, our society, our community wouldn’t be as progressive or as successful as we are.
“Still there is much to be done to ensure gender equality becomes the norm and not the exception.”
