Mayor Rob Small

Rob Small is in his second four-year term as Mayor, first elected in 2008. He previously served two terms as Councilor from 1994 to 2000.  Mayor Small has been employed with IMP Aerostructures in Amherst for the past 26 years and is the Director of New Business Development.

 

Mayor Small established a condensed Strategic Planning process that enabled Town Council to focus on those issues that needed to be addressed in the four-year term. The process includes identifying the priorities and then establishing a framework for completing each of these strategic priorities. In addition, changes have been implemented that see a more engaged management team in the reporting of progress against each strategic priority and the involvement of members of Council within each initiative.

 

Several initiatives have been completed in the first term of office including a new skate park for youth of our town, the reconstruction of Dickey Park (that includes a walking track, green area, splash pad, entertainment area and other services to support all ages). In addition, significant improvements have been made to the downtown core of Amherst with street construction, new parks, sidewalks, lighting and other services to re-energize the downtown as being the “heart” of our community.

 

In addition to establishing Strategic Priorities each term, priorities have been established for the improvement in operations and services managed by the Town of Amherst. Examples of improvements include the change in the budgeting process to identify capital projects and the tendering process in advance of the budget approval to better control spending and anticipated costs; the re-location of the Town Hall to a central location in the downtown to better serve our citizens, while generating increased traffic flow for the retail business located in the same area.

 

As we progress through the next four year term, the plan will be established through the strategic planning process and steps will be taken to further enhance the services being offered by the Town of Amherst as we continue down the road of providing the residents of the Town with a good place to work, raise a family and invest in our community.

 

Rob Small is married to Wendy and has three sons, Adam, Danny and Jason who have all been born, raised and educated in Amherst. Rob is a long time member of the Amherst Lions Club and has been an active member of the community, volunteering throughout the years on various boards, commissions and sports events/teams.
